Insanity seems to have many different definitions, but the ones that come out the most are: “dated : a severely disordered state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder or law : unsoundness of mind or lack of the ability to understand that prevents one from having the mental capacity required by law to enter into a particular relationship, status, or transaction or that releases one from criminal or civil responsibility.” According to Merriam Webster, these are what the definitions of insanity really are. Both of these definitions seem to fit into the world of today, but only one of them fits into the world of Samuel Beckett and in Waiting for Godot.
Extending the definition of “insanity” we can say that insanity is something we, as people, use to constantly judge somebody. We actually use it on a daily basis without realizing it. We may not say it out loud, but we always think about it whenever we’re out in the world. Insanity is something that our society has come up with to define somebody who is not “stable.” It is not always the case though, that somebody is insane, it could be that that is the way their personality works, but because we have this definition of insanity, everybody believes that that person is insane. I personally feel like all dictionaries leave out the extension of personality. As mentioned before, somebody’s personality could lead somebody to believe that they are insane. However, people also factor out their ignorance as to what their own personality is like. Ignorance is a key factor in determining insanity because often enough we all then to forget that we’re all a little crazy. Even the most sane person, has some insanity in them, because that’s just how our minds work, as I think that’s how they should work. “Insanity” is a term that we use loosely because we feel like it is in our right to determine insanity. Personally speaking, there is no way to actually determine if somebody is insane unless submitted to a series of tests, but because we live in a messed up society, sometimes it only takes a single look to say, “this person is completely insane.”
Culturally, “insanity” can be seen as something ordinary. In some cultures being insane is the norm because everybody in the family is insane. Insane can also factor in immense happiness and people mistake it for insanity because there is absolutely no way that somebody can be that happy for absolutely no reason. If this is the case, then my family is insane, especially with some of the things they come up with just to make all of their children happy, some go as far as going to Mexico to buy all of the drinks needed for a party that they are throwing for their children. Culture is what makes ethnicities different, it’s our different values that we follow that allow us to be who we are, and if we categorize as insane then so be it because it just makes us unique and surprisingly happy. Some of the cultural ideas of insanity are not insane, take home remedies as an example, so doctors would be totally against rubbing VapoRub all over your chest and feet then layering up to get over a cold when in reality it really does work. “Insanity” does not have to mean what people make it out to be, because at the end of the day it represents who we are.
By the definition of “insanity,” we can rule that both Vladimir and Estragon are insane. Vladimir and Estragon have this insane idea that Godot is this great savior that is going to come for them and save them from the world they live in. Their mindset is different from the rest of the characters, sure they are all waiting for Godot, but not all of them contemplate suicide as a way to get to Him. In the eyes of the law, committing suicide, or trying to commit suicide is a crime and a cry for help. Legally speaking in some countries it is against the law to try to commit suicide because it is basically manslaughter and murder at the 1st degree. The fact, that Vladimir and Estragon try to commit suicide to be with somebody who may not even exist, clearly indicates that they are insane. Vladimir and Estragon by definition are insane, they have this sick mentality that by dying hey will be with Godot. Their mentality is messed up, Beckett had this weirdly twisted mindset, by allowing Vladimir and Estragon to be the way they are.
Hi there Giselle,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your take on the judgement that goes on in everyday society, and how this is used to "diagnose" people. I agree and think that our own opinions interfere a lot when we interact with others. I also really enjoyed your real life examples, like the VapoRub, and the lengths your parents go for you. I thought it was touching and humorous.
One thing I thought that could have been improved was bringing Estragon and Vladimir into your discussion throughout the piece, rather than just at the end of it. I felt like a lot of the commentary you had could have been applied to them quite well.
Best Wishes,
Kendahl Awni
I completely agree that most dictionaries don't include the personal aspects of insanity and therefore make certain personality types seem "insane" by definition. I also agree that many people tend to write off other cultural norms as being insane because the norms are different from their own culture. I think with your post title the essay should have focused more on Waiting for Godot, and textual evidence to support your opinions would have been beneficial too. I liked that this post was easy to follow!
